Thar be whales captain!!

We are surrounded by minke whales in the ice channel.

What a tremendous sight - we feel very privileged.
Now that is a close-up of an Orca!

A bit too close for my comfort - being a penguin!

But how lucky for us to be treated to a 2 hour whale show at the back of the ship while parked in the ice at Cape Evans.
Oh my goodness, a real wildlife treat.

I am in awe of these regal Emperor penguins, hanging around near our parked ship.

The one at the back is really cute. It's still moulting and looks like it's wearing a fur shawl!
I just HAVE to get my photo taken with them!!

They are tall so I look up to them. Not curious like the other penguins we've met, but they have a real class about them.
WOW! To see this in real life!

I'm just gobsmacked - as our British passengers would say.
OK, it's around midnight and we've made it to Captain Scott's hut at Cape Evans!

We have spent the last 2 hours or so traversing the sea ice by sled and then by foot because there was too much ice to get the ship close to land.
It's amazing to think we are seeing up close, the original containers used by Scott's Antarctic Expedition back in 1910.

Not many people (or penguins) have seen this for real.
I think Geoff would have had trouble sleeping in these little wooden bunks.

People must have been a lot shorter back in those days!
This is the coldest we've been on our trip. We even have the ski goggles out for a run.
Ok, guys, where exactly are we going??

I hope Rodney and Aaron know the way back to the ship!
Hey, this is cool!

We can see the shadow of the ship (and Cath waving) on the pack ice as the ship cuts its way through!
Golden iceberg!

What an amazing sight at 2 in the morning. There's no sunset but the sun is pretty low in the sky to create this superb effect.
It's a bit chilly in the middle of the night (even with the sun out?!)

I've had to put my beanie on as it's a bit windy here on the bow of the ship.
Now that is a spectacular sight! It looks like waves of ice!

Can't believe these beautiful views in the middle of the night. There's not many of us still up enjoying this spectacular sight.

Ah, guys. I think we're stuck in pack ice.

Apart from being surrounded front and back by thick solid ice, we can tell by the way the Russian crew are sounding agitated and running around trying to find a way out!
Thanks to our expert crew we managed to escape the pack ice and the next day we're up on deck enjoying pina coladas.

A few crazy people dressed for the occasion in their Hawaiian (?) gear! No sense, no feeling!
Geoff and I are pretty pooped after being up all night watching all the excitment.

Here we are having a nap in Enderby's bar!
